Why I specialise in reports, presentations and brochures

As a designer, one of the questions I'm asked most often is why I focus almost exclusively on reports, presentations and brochures. After all, there are plenty of designers who offer everything from logos and websites to social media graphics and packaging design.
The simple answer is that, in a world where my time is limited, these are the projects where I can have the biggest impact.

Over the last 15 years, I've worked with organisations of all sizes, from local businesses and colleges to national brands and public sector organisations. Time after time, I've seen the same challenge emerge.
As a publication designer specialising in annual reports, presentations and brochures, I've seen first-hand how good document design can transform the way organisations communicate.
Organisations invest huge amounts of time, expertise and resource into creating important content, but the final document often doesn't communicate that information as effectively as it could. The content is there, the expertise is there and the evidence is there.
What is often missing is the clarity that helps people understand it.
Why document design matters
When people think about design, they often think about aesthetics first.
Of course, it’s a given that a professional document should look polished and on-brand. It should reflect the quality of the organisation behind it and create a positive first impression.
However, good document design goes much further than appearance. Whether it's an annual report, a board presentation or a brochure, the purpose of the document is to communicate information clearly and help the reader take something meaningful away from it.
A well-designed document guides people through information. It creates structure, hierarchy and flow. It helps readers find what matters most and understand it more quickly. When information is clear, people understand it. When people understand it, they are far more likely to engage with it, trust it and act on it.
That's why I believe good document design isn't decoration. It's an essential part of effective communication.
Annual reports and impact reports
Annual reports are often some of the most important documents an organisation produces. These documents need to communicate achievements, demonstrate accountability, present data clearly and build confidence among stakeholders, trustees, funders and partners.
The challenge is that they are frequently packed with information. Without careful design, key messages can become buried and important achievements can be overlooked.
Good annual report design helps organisations present complex information in a way that is accessible, engaging and easy to navigate, while remaining professional and credible. This is the sort of challenge I love - taking a document packed with valuable information and turning it into something people genuinely want to read.
Presentations and slide decks
Most presentations don't fail because of the content. More often, they struggle because too much information is competing for attention at the same time. We’ve all sat through a ‘death by PowerPoint presentation’ at least once in our lives…
I've seen presentations filled with excellent ideas that simply aren't landing because the audience doesn't know where to focus. Boring slides dense in text, way too many bullet points, no imagery, not doing their job in visually supporting the speaker.
Effective presentation design creates clarity. It supports the speaker rather than competing with them and helps audiences absorb information more easily. Structured layouts, infographics and visual hierarchy are some of the tools which provide clear data visualisation and make information so much easier to digest.
Whether the audience is a board of directors, a room full of stakeholders or a potential client, the goal remains the same: helping people understand the message.
Sam at SK DESIGN STUDIO did an amazing job on our branding and our PowerPoint training presentations which elevate our company image and makes them look instantly and completely at home in the high-performing organisations we are working with.Sam has been helpful and communicative throughout. She has been happy and receptive to amendments when required, actioning them quickly and efficiently to create engaging presentations for our Think Like A Pilot training participants. Thanks!

Brochures, whitepapers and corporate documents
Brochures, whitepapers and corporate publications often play an important role in marketing, stakeholder engagement and business development.
These documents are frequently used to explain services, showcase expertise or communicate complex ideas.
The most effective documents balance information and readability. They make it easy for people to find what they need, while reinforcing the professionalism and credibility of the organisation behind them.
When done well, they become documents people actually want to pick up, read and engage with.
We wanted to create a brochure for our Law Firm and Sam at SK Design Studio came highly recommended. We could not have been more delighted with the end result, it exceeded our expectations and created exactly the right image for our clients. It was within budget and Sam was in touch with regular progress reports.

Why I chose to specialise
As my career has developed, I've become increasingly interested in the relationship between design and communication.
I enjoy taking complex information and helping organisations present it in a way that feels clear, structured and accessible.
That's why I now focus on reports, presentations and brochures rather than trying to be a designer who does everything. Specialisation allows me to bring deeper experience, stronger processes and a better understanding of the challenges these documents present.
It also means I can spend my time helping organisations solve a very specific problem: turning important information into documents that people actually want to read, understand and engage with.
Looking beyond the design
A successful document isn't measured by whether it looks good on screen. It's measured by whether it achieves what it was created to achieve. Whether that's helping stakeholders understand an annual report, supporting a successful presentation or communicating the value of a service through a brochure, the goal is always the same.
To create documents that work harder for the organisations behind them.
That’s why I continue to specialise in reports, presentations and brochures. They’re often some of the most important documents an organisation produces and, when designed well, have the power to inform, persuade and inspire action.
If you’re working on an annual report, presentation or brochure and would like an experienced second pair of eyes on it, I’d be happy to have an informal conversation about your project.
